Come What May

So if you've read my last blog post and watched Moulin Rouge, then you've probably already heard this song. If not then plug in your earphones and prepare for an eargasm and a little heartache.

I love this song so much.
It makes me happy and sad all at the same time. It makes me long for a love so strong it gives people goosebumps when they hear my story. Whoa, this is getting deep.

Apparently, this is the film version of the song and not the song from the soundtrack. It's so much better than the one on the soundtrack too. Probably cause there's less instruments and it's just the piano and their voices. You can hear the emotions in their singing.

It's truly beautiful.

Take a look at the lyrics too.
They'll melt your heart.

Never knew I could feel like this
Like I've never seen the sky before
Want to vanish inside your kiss
Everyday I love you more and more

Listen to my heart, can you hear it sings
Telling me to give you everything
Seasons may change winter to spring
But I love you until the end of time

Come what may, come what may
I will love you until my dying day

Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place
Suddenly it moves with such a perfect grace
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste
It all revolves around you

And there's no mountain too high no river too wide
Sing out this song and I'll be there by your side
Storm clouds may gather and stars may collide
But I love you until the end of time

Come what may, come what may
I will love you until my dying day
Oh come what may, come what may I will love you

Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place...
Come what may, come what may I will love you until my dying day

Moulin Rouge

I like this movie so much but I'm surprised I haven't seen it on any lists of romance films.

What a pity.

I'd heard a lot about this movie and it was supposed to be the 'it' romantic film. I'd never really got the chance to watch it when I was younger because it wasn't for kids and I always thought I was too young to watch it. But I finally caught it on television last year and I loved it.

This movie made me cry so hard. I'm almost ashamed to talk about it.

Come on, let's jump right into it!

The story of Moulin Rouge follows a young english poet named Christian. It's set in the Montmatre region of Paris (just like Amelie, but this happens earlier) in a theatre called the Moulin Rouge. Together with his friends, he's written a play called Spectacular Spectacular! and is supposed to present it to the star of the Moulin Rouge, Satine. Gorgeous as hell with fiery red hair, Satine is a cabaret actress and a courtesan. On that night, she was supposed to meet with a Duke who was to be investing in the Moulin Rouge.

However, due to a mix-up, she ends up in a room with Christian. Believing that he is the Duke, she tries to seduce him to secure the investment. But her advances are useless on shy and innocent Christian as he is trying to . He too, does not know that she thinks he is a Duke. He sings for her and for a moment you believe that she might be falling in love with him. But when she finds out that she is not the Duke, she turns cold and angry towards Christian.

The real Duke visits her in her room and she, with some help, sells him the idea of Spectacular Spectacular and secures the investment. Under the terms of a contract, Satine is promised to the Duke.

Christian and Satine grow closer and spend more and more time together under the pretense of rehearsals. Even then, Satine is still unsure of her love for Christian. The Duke grows increasingly jealous and demands that Satine and him have supper together that night or he will stop financing the play. But Satine has already made plans with Christian.

However, before she even has a chance to choose, she falls ill and is taken to bed. It is then that we learn that she has tuberculosis.

The owner of Moulin Rouge, Zidler, convinces the Duke that Satine is so in love with the Duke that she is confessing. He calms down and a crisis averted.

Knowing that her relationship with Christian might jeopardise the show, she tries to convince him to stop but he is persistent and they continue.

During a rehearsal one day, it is suddenly brought to the attention of the Duke that the play is based on him, Satine and Christian. Him being the villain of course. He demands that the ending be changed immediately even when opening night is only a few days away. Satine offers to spend the night with him so that she can negotiate with him.

While she is in his room, she sees Christian down below and realises that she cannot go through with the Duke. He sees her looking down at Christian and is enraged and tries to rape her. She is, however, saved by one of the dancers.

He brings Satine back to Christian and they plan to runaway from the Moulin Rouge and the duke. But Zidler finally tells Satine that she's dying and also that the Duke plans to kill Christian and that she must save him by chasing him away by convincing him that she doesn't love him anymore.

She does so, unwilling, because it is the only way she knows how to save him. Christian doesn't know about the plot to kill him and believes that she has played with his heart all along.

He turns bitter and on the opening night of Spectacular Spectacular! he goes to the Moulin Rouge and confronts her, throwing money at her feet because he feels like all she's done is because of money.

But she sings their song and he understand that her love was real. The duke and his bodyguard try to shoot Christian but are stopped by Zidler and one of the dancers.

Christian and Satine finally come to terms with their love but the happy moment is cut short by Satine dying from her tuberculosis. Christian cries over her dead body and then writes about their story.

The end.

What I like about this movie:

Ewan McGregor. Oh lord. I don't even know why I have a thing for him.
He's not even that good-looking to me really.
It must be that adorable accent of his.
He does a really good job at playing the sensitive writer.

I lost it and started crying when he was crying over Satine in the last scene. I want my man to cry over me when I die. I want him to write a story about our love too. I want him to sing to me too. I want my own Christian.

It's a tragic love story and I am completely in love with those. Instead of a happily ever after, you get a bittersweet ending where the protagonist's love dies right when they are finally together. How sad. It's like every dream they ever had together just disappeared, all the plans they made to run away, to treasure their love, all gone.

Oh yeah, in case you don't know, this film is a musical. There's songs and stuff. So yeap, if you're into that kind of stuff then this is definitely your thing. But if not that I wouldn't even bother giving it a go.

Favourite Quotes:

Christian: I owe you nothing. And you are nothing to me. Thank you for curing me of my ridiculous obsession with love.

Satine: I don't need you anymore! All my life you made believe I was only worth what someone would pay for me! But Christian loves me. He loves me! He loves me, Harold. And that is worth everything! We're going away from you, away from the Duke, away from the Moulin Rouge!

Favourite Scene:

The scene in Satine's bedroom when she mistakes Christian for the Duke and tries to seduce him. It doesn't sound funny here but trust me, when you watch the scene you'll end up in stitches.

Actually the whole movie has its funny parts, even though it's kinda tragic.

What I learnt about love:

Treasure your loved ones and makes use of the time you have with them cause you never know when you'll lose the person you love.

Never lie to yourself and deny your love for someone.

Memoirs of a Geisha

Welcome to another blog post by yours truly (:
Today we are going to be talking about Memoirs of a Geisha.

I first caught this movie on tv, I think. And since then I've probably watched it four times. I never get tired of the storyline surprisingly. Maybe because it's set in Asia and hits a little closer to home. Or maybe because there's a chance that this has probably already happened in real life. It's possible right? But maybe without the happy ending.

Here we go.

So the movie is set in Japan and it's basically about this young girl, Chiyo, who was kidnapped and sent to an okiya (Geisha house). She is treated unkindly by the people in the okiya, especially so by Hatsumomo, the head geisha.

Initially, Chiyo had been studying to be a geisha. But after attempting to escape from the okiya to meet her sister, she was forced to become a slave to the okiya in order to pay back her debt. Quietly, she goes about her duties obediently but unhappily.

One day, she meets a stranger on a bridge and he buys her a snowcone when she sees how sad she is. Having been used to so much unkindness in the world, she is touched by his generosity. She sees that he is accompanied by a geisha and she vows to become one herself. He leaves her with a handkerchief and some money.

Instead of spending the money, she runs to the temple and gives the money as an offering. She prays that she will become a geisha and that she and the stranger will one day meet again. She also keeps the handkerchief safe and hidden in her room.

Years later, her wishes finally come true. Hatsumomo's rival, Mameha, takes Chiyo under her wing and trains her to become a geisha within months. She plans to do this so that Chiyo is able to pay back her debt to mother and the okiya. At this point of the movie, Mameha's intentions are not made clear. It is during this time that Chiyo changes her name to Sayuri and is reunited with the stranger, who happens to be Mameha's friend, the Chairman.

But because geisha's are not free to love, Sayuri must keep her love secret.

Also, the Chairman's friend, Nobu san, is slowly growing feelings for her.

To become a full geisha, Sayuri must first sell her virginity to the highest bidder. Mameha starts a bidding war between a few gentlemen (Doctor Crab and Nobu) so that Sayuri's virginity can be sold for an extremely high price. However, Hatsumomo interferes and ruins Sayuri's chances.

Sayuri then gets chosen to be the lead dancer for the Spring Dances and her performance draws her the attention of many men. One of those men is the Baron, who is Mameha's danna. He invites her to his home for a cherry blossom party and because the Chairman will be there, Sayuri begs Mameha to let her go. Because Mameha will not be there to look after her, she warns Sayuri to be wary of the Baron.

At the party, the Baron gifts her a kimono and strips her naked against her will in his room.

Mameha hears of this and confronts Sayuri about it. Even though, Sayuri tells Mameha that all the Baron did was look at her, Mameha believes that he took her virginity and that Sayuri is now 'worthless'. Sayuri vehemently argues that she is not worthless.

After a checkup and proving that her virginity was still intact, the bidding takes places and Sayuri mizuage sells for the highest bid in history. Mother is pleased and Sayuri is adopted by mother to inherit the okiya, instead of Hatsumomo's protege Pumpkin.

Hatsumomo, enraged, finds the handkerchief from the Chairman in Sayuri's room and tries to burn it. Sayuri tries to stop her and there's a struggle before they knock over a lamp and set fire to the room. Hatsumomo, realising that all her dreams have been dashed, purposefully douses oil on the flames to burn down the okiya since there is nothing left for her anymore.

She leaves the okiya, looking back one last time.

After this, world war two arrives and the Chairman arranges plans to keep Mameha and Sayuri safe. Sayuri seeks refuge making fabrics for kimonos. After the war, Mameha, the Chairman, Nobu, Pumpkin and Sayuri are reunited as they go on a trip to impress a future possible business partner, Colonel Derricks.

As Nobu's affection grows, Sayuri hatches a plan to humiliate herself in front of him but instead humiliates herself in front of the Chairman. Hopes dashed, she decides to give up on him finally. Standing atop a cliff, she lets the wind carry his handkerchief away.
Soon after, Mother tells her that she has a client to meet. She expects it to be Nobu san but it turns out to be the Chairman. He finally admits his feelings for her and also that he was the one who had gotten Mameha to be her mentor in order for him to get closer to her.

They kiss and the end.

What I like about this movie:

Hatsumomo is pure evil and I love her. Gong Li does such a good job at playing the spiteful and vicious geisha. I literally feel scared for Chiyo each time Hatsumomo hatches a plan.

Also I find it interesting that the elements are used a lot in this movie. It's an asian thing maybe. Fire is represented by Hatsumomo. She is rash, fierce, passionate and wild. Water is represented by Chiyo/Sayuri. She is calm, serene, humble and quiet. Her blue eyes are also a representation of that.

Throughout the whole movie, these two elements are at war with each other. They are directly against each other. The fire dies out eventually as seen when Hatsumomo leaves the okiya after burning it down.

I like how sad this movie is. Does that make me evil? Nah, I don't think so.

She's plucked from her home, her sister runs away without her, her parents pass away and she is then made to work as a slave to the okiya. It's like 139083 times worses cause she's just a kid. It's so sad but in the end, there's happy ending.

What I dislike:

The accents. Oh my god. You can literally tell who's Japanese and who is not. A few of the actors' American accents came through. Pumpkin and the Baron for example. It's kinda jarring and took me out of the moment.

I'm trying to think if the chairman saw Chiyo when she was just a little girl and decided that he'd find her again when she was of age. Or if the Chairman recognised Chiyo in that 1 second that he saw her in the teahouse and asked Mameha to take her under her wing. Cause if it was the former, it's kinda creepy.

Okay, not kinda. Like really really creepy.

And is it just me or is it weird that Chiyo donated the money to the temple? She said it was enough to feed her for like a month right? That's a lot of money. So she must have probably been really in love with him a lot or really wanted to be a geisha.

I would have kept the money.
At least some of it.
I'm just saying.

Favourite Quotes:

Sayuri: The heart dies a slow death. Shedding each hope like leaves, until one day there are none. No hopes. Nothing remains.

Mameha: Remember, Chiyo, geisha are not courtesans. And we are not wives. We sell our skills, not our bodies. We create another secret world, a place only of beauty. The very word "geisha" means artist and to be a geisha is to be judged as a moving work of art.

Sayuri: She paints her face to hide her face. Her eyes are deep water. It is not for Geisha to want. It is not for geisha to feel. Geisha is an artist of the floating world. She dances, she sings. She entertains you, whatever you want. The rest is shadows, the rest is secret.

Favourite Scenes:

I liked the scene where Sayuri screamed that she wasn't worthless just because Mameha thought that the Baron had taken her virginity. I like that scene because it just shows how terrible people are when it comes to treating women in the past. Just because a woman has lost her virginity she is deemed worthless.

But good job mankind. You've come far.

And of course I like the scene where she first meets the chairman cause it's sweet and adorable and becomes the stepping stone to so many other things in life. Before she met him, she was miserable but right after she did, her life had purpose again. Because she's been used to so much bad things happening in her life, this one single act of kindness gave her something to work forward to.

What I learnt about love:

Love can wait.

500 Days of Summer

I was pretty excited over this movie since I'd heard a lot of good things about it. But just halfway through, I found it pretty meh. I mean, love Zooey and JGL and they were good in the movie but the plot just wasn't enough to keep me interested.

Honestly, I can't even understand what all the hype was about. I think what people liked most about it is the way it's shot. Like how the director shows the parallels from the good times to when the relationship starts to fall apart through the 500 days. Plus, that expectations

Or maybe that's the thing.
Because this isn't a romance film.
It's a film about how people can be so taken by their own illusions.

Tom, a greeting card writer, longs to find his soulmate and when Summer, his boss's new assistant, joins the office he is pretty much smitten instantly. They find out that they have a few things in common and finds out that she does not believe in love. Despite that, he attempts to win Summer over. Slowly, they start to fool around. Summer warns him that she isn't ready for a relationship and he says that he's completely fine with that, even when he really isn't.

It's a tug of war between two people who want to be together but in different ways.

Summer drops numerous hints that she's not happy in the relationship but Tom cannot see this and goes on believing everything is alright. Finally, she breaks up with him and instead of moving on, he decides to win her back. That fails and he slips into depression after he finds out that she is engaged. Slowly, he starts to realise that his relationship was not as he thought it was. Summer was never really as invested in the relationship as him.

The film ends with him taking a chance and going out with a date on a girl he just met.
And it turns out the girl's name is Autumn.

Fin.

What I think:

I actually don't like this movie. Not because of the actually movie itself but because I know that there are guys like Tom out there. And this movie actually reminds me of someone I knew.

Sigh. The movie is cute, I guess. It's offbeat and it's quirky. The characters are interesting, even the minor ones.

Summer though, was an enigma and I never really got why Tom fell for her in the first place.
It's like he just saw her for the first time and then placed all his love on her.

I never really got a sense of who she is. So the movie basically says that she's almost completely average but she's always caught the attention of guys for some reason. I guess she's pretty and she listens to a few bands he listens to. But that's basically it. Okay, maybe afterwards he realises that she is smart and fun to hang around with but that's not enough for a good relationship.

If anyone realised, she is the season summer. She doesn't have all the complexities of a real woman because the director didn't want it, I guess? She's like Tom's idea of a perfection. She's happy and fun, brings sunshine into everyone's lives and everyone loves her. But summer has to end eventually. And if you think about it, her name is Summer Finn.

Finn. Fin. The end.

And then there's Tom. I hate Tom. And here's why.

Reasons why I hate Tom :

1) Why would you say that you're going to get her back when she doesn't want to be gotten back.

Hello, she told you she was unhappy with you already. I can't understand why you would want to be in a relationship with someone that's unhappy with the relationship. Isn't it just torture? And if you're saying, "I know we would be perfect together, just shut up now. If she's not happy but you're happy and you want her to suffer with you then that's just selfish.

Unless you guys broke up for a stupid reason that can actually be worked out.

2) Because he called her a bitch because she broke up with him.

People either love or hate Summer. The people who hate her think that she's a bitch and that she screwed Tom over. But the thing is that she already made it clear to Tom that she didn't want a relationship. Of course, they were clearly not just friends. I believe that they were something else totally.

She broke up with him for a good reason. She wasn't happy. She didn't feel any love for him.

Do you really expect a girl to stay on after that?

3) He's just selfish.

I hate him. Why is he playing the sensitive guy and expects the girl to look out for his feelings when he's not looking out for hers? His life sorta fell apart when she left because he put everything he had in her. All of his happiness depended on her. Sounds sweet? No bloody way. It didn't matter if she was happy.

He invested everything in her, even when she told him that she didn't want a relationship.
And she tells him that she cannot guarantee that her feelings will be constant.
So he calls her a bitch after they break up.

He just projected all of his feelings onto a girl that he never really knew.

Favourite Quotes:

"Just because she likes the same bizzaro crap as you doesn't mean she's your soulmate."

Favourite Scene:

The break up scene.
I love it. I mean, it pretty much just sums up the whole relationship in one scene.
They never really talked about the Sid and Nancy thing so each assumed they were Sid.
And Summer trying to downplay the whole breakup.

I think it's hilarious.

What I learnt about love:

Communication is important.
Always talk to your partner about where you are right now.
If not, it can get messy.

TEDX Youth Day!

\

TEDx Youth day was inspirational. Initially, I was dreading spending 8 hours listening to series of boring talks. It was mandatory attendance for everyone in my course so I just grit my teeth and went along with it.

Okay, so the thing I used to hate about talks like these is that the speakers were labelled successful because they were making a lot of money. Then they tell you that hard work and pushing yourself is the key to success. When it came to the Q&A session, I was always so tempted to ask them whether they were really happy.

But TEDx was different. The talks by all the speakers made me realise different things. They taught me to free my mind, not to be afraid to be different and to never stop dreaming. These were things I had always been telling myself since I was a little girl. Slowly, you lose track of these things. Not because you don't believe in them anymore but because the monotony of daily life really starts to make you realise how ordinary you are.

As a child, most of us taught that money is the thing you are supposed to work forward to. It doesn't have to be something you like, it just has to make you a lot of money. This is especially evident in an asian society. Parents encourage their children to excel in school rather than asking them to put in effort for things that we really love.

I remember as a child my parents used to bring me to ballet and piano lessons. I was interested at first only because it was something new. Soon the novelty wore off and I discovered that I never liked ballet or piano. In a ballet class full of skinny tiny petite girls, I was the only tall chubby girl there. I felt like a fat lumbering elephant. And we all know elephants can't dance right? I didn't like it at all. Piano on the other hand was a chore.

I did however have a passion for writing. I'm sure my parents were aware of this but they never suggested writing classes for me. They were willing to fork out $90 a month for guitar lessons though. I really do appreciate the things they do for me and love them to bits but I just don't agree with the way they do things.

Something I took away from the talk:
"Your best career is an expression of yourself."

I love this quote. I mean, your job is something that you have to commit to. What's the point of working a job that you hate? Okay, maybe the pay's good but money can only buy you temporary happiness. Why not do something you can actually enjoy? You can go to work happy everyday and guess what, you can even make money from it! Tell me which sounds better?
